Fulvio Wirz, nato a Napoli nel 1977, si Laurea in architettura presso l’ Università Federico II con lode e dignità di pubblicazione della tesi.

Consegue un master in”Progettazione dello spazio pubblico” nel 2003 ed uno in ”Progettazione architettonica per l’integrazione del fotovoltaico nel 2004″.

Dal 2002 affianca alle esperienze progettuali nello studio paterno l’attività didattica nell’ambito dei corsi di progettazione del prof. Lucio Morrica ed una personale ricerca nelle relazioni tra architettura e nuovi media concretizzata attraverso numerosi concorsi e culminante con il conseguimento, nel 2008, del dottorato di ricerca in progettazione architettonica con la tesi “Rappresentazione Digitale e Composizione architettonica”.

Dal 2005 collabora in qualità di project architect nello studio Zaha Hadid Architects di Londra vincendo prestigiosi concorsi internazionali come la Biblioteca di Siviglia, il Masterplan per l’area “Kartal-Pendik” di Istanbul, la “Lilium Tower” a Varsavia ed il Museo “Eli & Edythe” in Michigan. E’ stato responsabile del progetto “Aura” esposto a Villa Foscari nell’ambito della Biennale di Venezia del 2008 e co-responsabile della prestigiosa Opera House di Dubai. Attualmente è incaricato del progetto di una moschea in Kuwait e di una serie di prodotti di design.

aast advanced architecture Settimo Tokyo – Biennale 2009 – 20011 è un’iniziativa ideata e promossa da Casa delle Arti e dell’Architettura di Settimo Torinese CASARTARC, rivolta a professionisti e tecnici delle costruzioni per sviluppare un nuovo approccio al design attraverso strumenti innovativi.

Nell’ambito della Biennale, CASARTARC propone, per il 2009, eventi ed attività che hanno lo scopo di favorire l’impiego di software parametrici e generativi applicati al processo architettonico avanzato.

Attraverso una mostra di 30 progetti d’architettura sviluppati con software parametrici, provenienti da studi di fama internazionale (Zaha Hadid Architects London, AKT, openSystems, London, Frank Owen Gehry and Associates), ed una conferenza, si intende offrire una panoramica sullo stato attuale dell’arte.

DIGITAL WATER PAVILION

The Digital Water Pavilion is a singular and innovative project of Milla Digital, implemented by Expoagua Zaragoza 2008 on behalf of the City of Zaragoza. Located in the connection node of the Expo site with the Milla Digital area, the DWP joins the theme of water with the digital technologies, creating a sense of continuity towards the future for the big projects of transformation nowadays in course in Zaragoza. This Pavilion of minimalist expression and small dimensions is, at the same time: a sophisticated machine of high mechanical precision; a building appearing and desappearing thanks to a 12 hydraulic pistons system; and a place where spaces are flexible, changing and responsive due to the action of 120 meters of water walls digitally controlled by almost 3.000 electromagnetique valves. It has been designed by carlorattiassociati | walter nicolino & carlo ratti, developping the interactive water wall concept created by the Smart Cities Group (MIT Media Laboratory) with the direction of Prof. William J. Mitchell.

"Produzione di un installazione temporanea" July 13 > 29 - Torino

Background
Dalla sinergia di Politecnico di Torino, Architectural Association e Columbia University nasce una ricerca border-line tra design e architettura finalizzata alla ideazione e produzione di una struttura temporanea da installare presso l'Università di Scienze Gastronomiche di Pollenzo durante il periodo di Designing Connected Places. Sistemi di progettazione parametrica sono utilizzati per concepire uno spazio pubblico sperimentale capace di rispondere ad alcuni stimoli investigati nei sei workshop.

Domanda di progetto
In una città dalla struttura complessa nella quale le interazioni fra le parti si intensificano, nella quale il numero dei decisori e degli scenari culturali si sovrappongono, si interconnettono, e talvolta si scontrano, è necessario rispondere con nuove tipologie, nuovi organismi urbani e nuovi sistemi di gestione del progetto. In questo scenario, come possono la progettazione digitale parametrica e la prototipazione rapida diventare strumenti di ricerca e sviluppo? Come li si puo' sfruttare per investigare temi fondamentali come la salute ed il benessere, l'efficienza della mobilità urbana, la sicurezza e l'ecologia?"

Background.
The synergy between the Politecnico di Torino, the Architectural Association and Columbia University gives life to research on the border between design and architecture to conceive and produce a temporary structure to be installed at the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo during the period of Designing Connected Places. Parametric design systems are used to conceive an experimental public space able to respond to some of the stimuli investigated in the six workshops.

Project question.
In a city with a complex structure where interactions between the parties involved intensify, in which the number of decision-makers and cultural scenarios overlap, interlink, and sometimes clash, a response is required with new forms, new urban bodies and new planning management systems. In this scenario, how can parametric digital design and rapid prototyping become tools of research and development? How can they be exploited to investigate fundamental questions like health and well-being, the efficiency of urban mobility, security and ecology?

cg studied and worked in torino, rome (italy) and london (uk). he graduated in architecture at the politecnico di torino in 1997, he got a master degree in design (m.arch.) at the architectural association in 2002 and a phd in the poltecnico di torino in 2006. he has been design architect for zaha hadid architectsfor the projects of the new high speed trains station of afragola and the new bmw central building in leipzig (competition phase). he worked for the winter olympics 2006 hockey stadium (isozaki + maggiora + arup). he has been involved in the coordination of the fiera di milano - polo urbano - urban design project (libeskind + hadid + isozaki + maggiora). from 2005 he works in his own studio and teaches in the 2nd faculty of architecture of the politecnico di torino.

A Brick for Greg Lynn

It is one single element, like a brick. That's the idea. It’s a new kind of brick to build with.
That's what Greg Lynn explains about his project for the exhibition at Sci-arc.
The structure fell apart, the day after the opening.
From the learning point of view: amazing, even if the result might be discouraging.
Why? To test a structure in such a public space, it is not that easy. They have been working for two years. No one was expecting it. In the computer's software was working perfectly. So was went wrong? Scaffolding.
Studying a system to help build the structure. A system that would have allowed the right positioning of the bricks.
As a matter of fact, at already halfway of the building process, the shape wasn't working properly.

The computer took us away from the reality. Connections perfectly under control in the virtual reality, become unstable for accumulation of imprecision in the everyday reality.
Maybe a well done scaffolding would have avoided the sum of imprecision versus a kind of free building process, that has been involved this time.

As a student pointed out, the mortar helps the bricks in their connection, and I would say, it also help to cover and to smooth imprecise bricks or assembling. Greg Lynn though, seems more interested in a pure approach of a single element that aggregates with others to create a structure/wall.

Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho (born December 15, 1907) is a Brazilian architect who is considered one of the most important names in international modern architecture. He was a pioneer in the exploration of the constructive possibilities of reinforced concrete.

His buildings are often characterised by being spacious and exposed, mixing volumes and empty space to create unconventional patterns and often propped up by pilotis. Both lauded and criticised for being a "sculptor of monuments"[1], his most famous design, the plan for the city of Brasilia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“A+surface is a free Association, non-policy, no-profit”

It is regulated by a statute lodged at the Politecnico di Torino and is registered in the official list.

The associaiton was created by five students of the architecture faculty - politecnico di torino - who share a keen passion for architecture, and it is mainly focused on experimenting with the theories of contemporary architecture research, by organising workshops and conferences on a regular basis, promoting meetings on architecrure, design and research with the students of the faculty of architecture.

it was founded in 2005 with the purpose to disclose the new techniques of design in the computer science and the modelling real in scale.

The Association plays a major role within the accademic life of the politecnico thanks to several activities, such as:

-cultural initiatives primarly focused on architecture, research, design

-promoting cultural exchanges with similar architectural and cultural associations located throughout Italy and foreign universities.

-fostering and encouraging the circulation of architecture thanks to internet and leaflets

- organising conferences, debates, convenction, workshops and whatever else may adapt to the students' needs, both in Italy and abroad.

Two main events have been scheduled for 2008, also thanks to the promotion of politecnico:

-day conference and study: “digital design, prototyping and computer systems innovative”

-Workshop “ecopavilion” in collaboration with politecnico di torino and tutors aknowledged internationally

Here come "Le isole del tesoro ("The Treasure Islands"), a regional campus for contemporary culture, conceived and organized by iMage, and promoted by the Region of Tuscany, with the objective of encouraging a sensibility for contemporary architectural research in the Tuscan territory while also respecting the landscape and the history of the cities involved.

5+1AA, Carlini & Valle Architetti Associati, Gruppo A12, Ian+, Id-lab, maO, Marco Navarra (NOWA) are the architects who tutored, from October to November 2006, a number of young neo-architects with the aim of renewing the visions of Tuscany.

The project, curated by Paola Bortolotti and Marco Brizzi, and coordinated by Franco Filippini, involved eight municipalities (Capoliveri, Lastra a Signa, Peccioli, Poggio a Caiano, Prato, Rio nell'Elba, San Gimignano, San Giovanni Valdarno) in seven architectural design workshops, each lasting a week. The goals of the workshops were to elaborate concepts and ideas for the spatial qualification of specific areas in the eight cities.

In 2001, Time Magazine named Greg Lynn one of 100 of the most innovative people in the world for the 21st Century. In 2005, Forbes Magazine named him one of the ten most influential living architects. Greg Lynn has been at the cutting edge of design in both architecture and design culture in general when it comes to the use of the computer. The buildings, projects, publications, teachings and writings associated with his office have been influential in the acceptance and use of advanced technology for design and fabrication.

Lynn has received awards from the AIA, Progressive Architecture and the American Academy of Arts & Letters, and has been recognized for "shap[ing] the public realm" by the National Building Museum in Washington for his Korean Presbyterian Church of New York, which is also listed by the NYC Landmarks Commission. His work is in the permanent collection of CCA, SFMoMa and MoMA (which also houses his industrial design work), and also been exhibited at the Pompidou, Beyeler, Cooper Hewitt, MAK, MoCA, NAi, Carnegie, ICA and Secession museums, among others. He represented the United States in the American Pavilion of the 2000 Venice Architecture Biennale.

His many teaching positions in the United States and Europe include ETHZ, the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and Yale. His numerous publications include Time, Newsweek, New Yorker, New Republic, Popular Science, Art in America, Architectural Digest, Dwell, Monument, Index, Architectural Record, Blueprint and Architecture. He is the author of seven books and monographs, including Animate Form, considered the seminal book on the use of digital technology in architecture.

Yansong Ma + Qun Dang: MAD Dinner

Founding Principal Yansong Ma, originally from Beijing, received his M.Arch from Yale in 2002. Prior to founding MAD in 2004, Mr. Ma worked as a project designer with Zaha Hadid Architects in London and Eisenman Architects in New York. He also taught architecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Ma was the winner of the 2006 Architecture League of New York Young Architect Award. He also received the 2002 Samuel J. Fogelson Memorial Award of Design Excellence as well as the American Institute of Architects Scholarship for Advanced Architecture Research in 2001.

Principal Qun Dang, originally from Shanghai, received her M.Arch at Iowa State University. Prior to MAD, Ms. Dang worked for several major architecture firms in the United States, including Perkins Eastman, on projects of different scales. She has had several teaching positions including an assistant professorship at Iowa State University, a visiting professorship at Pratt Institute and an assistant professorship at Iowa State University's Foreign Studies Program in Rome, Italy. Ms. Dang received the 2000 American Institute of Architect’s Certificate of Merit. She also got the Paul S. Studies in Architecture & Culture Award, Design Media Award and the Academic Excellence from ISU in 2001.

Invitation to all architects of the world: Contribute in the

making of the future of architectural thought

World Architecture Community, launched on March 1, with 200 honorary members including Hans Hollein, Mario Botta, and Fumihiko Maki, is probably the first interactive database created to provide an opportunity for all local practices to become internationally recognized. Unique features of this portal enable all members to contribute in the making of the future of architectural thought by submitting, discussing, editing, rating, sharing their work.

While there are many channels that promote architecture, WA will probably be the first interactive database created to provide an opportunity for all local practices to present their work to the international audience and become internationally recognized.

It is evident that content capacity in printed media is very limited that only a few can access. Appearing in international or even local media is highly competitive and requires grand projects; therefore local practices rarely have the chance to be criticized and the agenda of architecture concentrates on a few names. On the other hand, there are many young, talented architects, passionately designing buildings in the different parts of the world. Unfortunately, as they cannot appear on the media, they are solely criticized by their customers. Impetus for creativity, however, is criticism. WA realizes the dream of local practices to be discussed by prominent scholars and academicians from different countries via the platform offered by the internet. Architects and scholars from ALL countries of the world are invited to submit their buildings and writings freely. The aim of WA is to highlight the different quests of local practices in the global agenda and initiate a new definition for architectural media. WA Community Portal also aims to present the work of all contemporary masters of architecture in a concise form eventually with their support of the educational premises of the project.

Another unique feature of the portal is that Issue Pages can be created by all members as a collaborative effort to create connections across the individual resources on the internet. For instance, an architect being inspired from local culture, can create an issue page to define his theoretical discourse that has guided his design, and relate his buildings to this issue page so that theory and practice in architecture can come together within the same context. This independent global forum and extensive database will be also a big occasion for theorists. They will be able to access examples, works, and efforts from most diverse regions and cultures of the world and will have the chance to get in touch with practice at a global scale.

All members will be able to submit links, articles, projects (even unrealized or projects under construction can be submitted) to this completely free international portal. Contributions from all members will have equitable chances to be represented, promoted, reviewed and criticized at this international arena.

Robert Hodgin has recently switched coasts and now lives in San Francisco. He is a founding partner of the Barbarian Group and heads up its west coast office. He got his start with Flash but doesn't like to talk about it. What he does like to talk about is his love for Processing and audio-visual experimentation which he showcases at flight404.com. These experiments in no way reflect his schooling. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in sculpture in 1998. He paid off his last school loan a few months ago. «In Italy everything takes so long, I have dozens of building sites opened and we cannot finish anything. I would like to sell my work and not only on paper». Zaha Hadid is upset with Italy. Fifty-eight years old, Iraqi, undisputed queen of worldwide architecture and the first woman to win the Pritzker prize (the equivalent of the "Nobel" for architecture) is in Innsbruck to inaugurate her latest wonder: the Nordkettenbahn, the cable railway station created, planned and built in less than two years.Ms. Hadid, here in Innsbruck this is your second important work created in only four years: here they could not even find an agreement on the Citylife project to upgrade the former Fair of Milan. From North to South there are dozens of projects from your office in Italy, or perhaps we should say building sites, eternally opened? Here everything is a lot slower and we must be very patient. Every project has its own personal stalemate situation. I believe it depends on the fact that nothing has happened for such a long time, for years there have only been commercial operations, architecture had nothing to do with matters of public interest. Instead now there is a revival and the fact that it is coming from above is positive but we must consider this slow and difficult run-in.Do you believe in this change? I don't know. I see a lot of enthusiasm but going from intentions to facts is a very long passage. Architects must do a double job. It is as if in Italy people are afraid of anything new, they avoid any kind of change and keep it away.It is also true that you work in two very delicate sectors for Italy, the contemporary sector and the infrastructures: the Maxxi in Rome and the High Speed Line station in Afragola, in Naples, these are projects with a strong symbolic meaning…Those who administer culture and modernity do not want to destroy the past; they are only trying to open towards something new. Tradition as a limit is an alibi, indeed for us architects it is wonderful to work in your country because there is a great balance between what is given and what is received. As for the Maxxi, next year it should finally open but we have had so many problems, the project has been ready for some time now, but we were blocked at phase one. The whole thing is there but unfortunately we must still make do with fragments.What about the Citylife project in Milan? In that case private figures must really make it become something important: our work on the former Fair is the result of mediation and willpower that have little to do with us. There is no doubt that the old structure was truly horrible.Do you think it is coincidental that, after the arrival of architectural stars like yourself, Rem Koolhas and the two Swiss Herzog and de Meuron, all involved in important projects like your Betile Museum of Cagliari, an Architect Festival like Festarch was created?I believe that the reason for big architectural projects is actually to create movement, a stir. In any case this should be true anywhere.Do you believe that in general this is a good moment for architecture? Yes, today things are definitely going better. Look around: 80% of the buildings created after the war are ugly. They used to build for the sake of building, because the population was increasing and there was a need for structures, or for money, interests, speculation. There were no projects for the city and little attention was given to urban harmony. Nobody thought about it.Which is the country where it is best to work? Germany is a fantastic country because there is a system of public works that really runs smoothly, as in Austria. Then there is Spain that is experiencing a very lively phase.By now your work is at 360 degrees and goes from engineering to a design collection: Zaha Hadid is no longer only a studio of architecture, but is becoming a brand. Linking architecture to art and design is not a new idea; they were even more connected previously.In a while the Miami/Basel Fair will start, the art fair in which a number of your works will appear. What do you think of this new so-called art design market? I don't think that is art. It is a way to make money, organize fairs, actually a way to create commercial value. Of course it is true that people are a lot more interested in art today and they invest a lot more. The arrival of the art gallery owner Larry Gagosian in Rome in this period is not incidental.But it is a field in which you too "play": for example with your latest work, Dune Formations, ordered by the David Gill Galleries in London… That is not an art gallery, it is a financial gallery. I appreciate what Ambra Medda managed to create at Miami/Basel very much. However we must not confuse business with artistic creation.

Neil Spiller is Professor of Architecture and Digital Theory and a practicing architect. He is the M.Arch Course Director, Director of the Advanced Virtual and Technological Architecture Research Group (AVATAR) and Vice Dean at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College, London. He is author of the book Digital Dreams - Architecture and the New Alchemic Technologies (1998). He is co-editor of AD Young Blood (2001), among many other AD titles, and is the former editor of Building Design Interactive magazine. He is co-editor with Peter Cook of The Power of Contemporary Architecture (1999) and the Paradox of Contemporary Architecture (2001). Spiller was also one of the ten international critics featured in the Phaidon book 10x10.

He lectures around the world and his work has been exhibited and published worldwide. His book, Visionary Architecture - Blueprints of the Modern Imagination was published by Thames and Hudson in November 2006 and his Digital Architecture NOW compendium of contemporary digital architectural practice will be published by Thames and Hudson during Spring 2008.

He was the 2002 John and Magda McHale Research Fellow at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

The “Circolo della Sedia”, with the cooperation of “Vibiemme”, organises the competition “ Dynamicamente 2008” for university students.
This competition lets university students with great capacities and inventiveness distinguish themselves in the design range.
Moreover it makes others know the “Distretto della sedia”, an area leader in the world for the chair’s production, situated near Udine.
This competition it's only for the students regularly registered for the academic year 2007/2008 at “corso di laurea triennale” (first degree), “corso di laurea specialistica” or at “corso di laurea a ciclo unico” ( bachelor degree) at one of the European Universities .

You can participate like single student or like a group composed by max 2 people.

Designers can decide among 3 classes:
1) COMMUNITY: design a chair, which can be used in meeting places, like conference halls, universities, library or in other places where a lot of people can meet.
2) HAPPY HOUR: design a dynamic chair, which can be used by youth in pubs, discos or fast food.

Jeffrey Kipnis is professor of architectural design and theory at the Knowlton School of Architecture of The Ohio State University. His writings on art and architecture have appeared in such publications as Log, hunch, Harvard Design Magazine, Quaderns, 2G, El Croquis, Art Forum, Assemblage, and his books include Choral Works: The Eisenman-Derrida Collaboration, Perfect Acts of Architecture, and The Glass House. As architecture/design curator for the Wexner Center for the Arts, he organized the design survey, “Mood River” with co-curator Annetta Massie and “Suite Fantastique,” a compilation of four exhibitions: Perfect Acts of Architecture; The Furniture of Scott Burton; The Predator, a collaboration between Greg Lynn and Fabian Marcaccio; and Imaginary Forces – Motion Graphics.

His film, A Constructive Madness, produced in collaboration with Tom Ball and Brian Neff, looks at the architect’s work on the unbuilt but seminal Peter Lewis house project. His most recent study of Stephen Holl’s Bloch Addition to the Nelson Atkins Museum appears in his new book, Stone and Feather.

The lecture will be about *happy*, *zany* and other important political trends.

Throughout the world climate change is affecting the conditions of nature and local weather. Most people experience these changes as an imbalance between nature and the human environment. This IFLA student competition seeks to stimulate the discussion about the specific contribution of landscape and urban planning and design to realize a new balance between nature and the human environment.

UTOPIA
Climate change and its impact on nature and weather conditions is a world-wide phenomenon, but in each region the impact is different. Especially where it concerns changes in water quantities and qualities. What could be the new inspirational ways of planning, new ways of designing flow systems (of water, transport, energy, materials, information, etc.) and designing new spatial environments, that would create new environmental conditions? Are concepts such as ?utopia?, ?autarchy? or ?cradle to cradle? still valuable?

THE ASSIGNMENT
You are invited- to name the (local, regional) problem in nature or the human environment that you are most intrigued with, and to link the problem to a specific site/region.- to invent a new, innovating and inspirational solution for the problem and site. Your ideas should include one or more of the following concepts: utopia, autarchy, paradise, sustainability, self-sufficiency.- to present plans and designs, that reflect your ideas. You are free to use a variety of graphic methods to present your ideas. Part of the challenge is to graphically communicate your work as effectively as possible. Mecanoo architecten: National Performing Arts Center, Kaohsiung

Mecanoo architecten wins Taiwan's most prestigious project

Friday March 23rd the Governor of Kaohsiung announced that Mecanoo architecten has won the design competition for the new National Performing Arts Center in Kaohsiung. At 100,000 m2 the National Performing Arts Centre is to become the largest theatre complex in Taiwan. The theatre complex will be located in the Wei-Wu-Ying Metropolitan Park and features a concert hall, an opera house, a theatre, a black box with a total of 5,800 seats and an open-air theatre suitable for thousands of visitors. The surrounding 65 ha park is part of the design brief. Francine Houben, director of Mecanoo architecten, presented the winning competition design to an international jury of architects, theatre specialists and impresarios. Mecanoo’s design was unanimously selected because of the building’s strength in expression, the integration of the complex with the park, efficient logistical planning, advanced theatre design and facility techniques and the building design’s response to the subtropical climate of the city of Kaohsiung. The building costs for the theatre complex are € 200 million, the budget of the park is not yet known. Building construction will start at the beginning of 2009, in 2012 it will be completed.

The National Performing Arts Center will become the new icon of the city of Kaohsiung, the largest harbour city of Taiwan and one of the largest harbour cities in the world with 1.5 million inhabitants. By building the Performing Arts Center, the city will symbolize its evolution from a harbour city to a modern cultural city. An important source of inspiration for Mecanoo’s building design were the existing centuries-old banyan trees on location. The banyan tree is one of the world’s largest trees. The crown of the Banyan tree can grow so wide that according to legend, Alexander the Great took shelter underneath it with his entire army. Mecanoo’s building complex is 200 metres wide and 160 metres deep. Because of the openings in the roof, the passageways and open spaces, an almost porous building is created in which interior and exterior blur. The partially grass and plant covered roof creates natural and efficient building cooling in the subtropical climate. The large roof also provides an informal public space where the city residents can stroll, practice Tai Chi, mediate or just relax. Inspired by old Greek theatre, an open-air theatre was designed on the roof complex at the point where the roof dips to the ground. The surrounding park in turn becomes a stage.

Zaha Hadid from London won second prize. Kiyoshi Sey Takeyama Amorphe from Tokyo, Japan became third. In total 43 international architects entered the competition.

Programme: Theatre complex of 100,000 m2 with a concert hall of 2,300 seats, an opera house with 2,000 seats, a theatre hall with 1000 seats, an experimental Black Box with 500 seats, an open-air theatre and park design for 65 ha. deVERcidade - a city in each view

Last month took place in an abandoned supermarket in Fortaleza, Brazil, the 3rd edition of deVERcidade Project, a local exposition of contemporary photography and visual art. This year the exposition host works from artists all over the country, sharing their experiences, and their view about their city. The name of exposition plays with different meanings of different words in Portuguese language, such VER (view) and cidade (city) putting everything together to create "deVERcidade" that could be understood as "diversidade" (diversity) or "de ver cidade" (of seeing the city). This year there were different free of charge events happening at the same time of the exposition, such as workshops, artist meetings, concerts, book release, book & coffee shop and social and visual inclusion.

The SCI-Arc Gallery is pleased to present, Dark Side of the Moon, a new site-specific installation by Los Angeles-based firm, Michael Maltzan Architecture. This installation introduces a new threshold in the gallery, creating a space between two worlds that provokes interaction and a simultaneous experience for, and between, those who visit.

As viewers enter the gallery, a surface descends above them, arcing across the entirety of the 1400+ square foot space and gradually bending toward the gallery floor. Expanding the role that this “fifth façade” has played in the Michael Maltzan Architecture’s recent projects, the exhibition transforms the soffit of the gallery into unique space by positioning the structure above the gallery walls rather than within them.

Above this figured space, the smooth, curving form meets visitors, encouraging them to engage the installation directly. The surface widens at its lowest points, allowing visitors to lift their head and shoulders through this threshold into a new sphere above where they discover a new space—and sometimes each other—in an unexpected, shared experience. In this way, the installation creates a moment of intense simultaneity: visitors find themselves in two spaces at once, yet neither fully in one or the other. Extending the experience of simultaneity that is so important in the practice’s work, this barrier at the center of the gallery creates a new, unified space, its curvilinear form highlighting the relationship between built form and the viewer — in a collective sense, not a singular one.

Wolf D. Prix, born in Vienna in 1942, is a cofounder of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. He studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology, the Architectural Association of London, and the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles.

Since 1993, Wolf D. Prix has been Professor for Architecture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. Since 2003, he has been Head of the Institute for Architecture and serves as Vice-Rector of the university.

He taught as a Visiting Professor at the Architectural Association in London in 1984 and at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1990. From 1985 to 1995, Wolf D. Prix was active as Adjunct Professor at the SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. Since 1998, he has been a faculty member of Columbia University in New York. In 1999, Wolf D. Prix was awarded the Harvey S. Perloff Professorship at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2001 he was made an Adjunct Professor at UCLA. Since 2001 he has been a Doctor Honoris Causa de la Universidad de Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2004, Wolf D. Prix received the Annie Spink Award for Excellence in Architectural Education for his commitment to teaching and training.

From 1995 to 1997, Wolf D. Prix was a member of the Architectural committee in the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts. He is a member of the Austrian Art Senate as well as of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Furthermore, Wolf D. Prix is a member of the Architectural Association Austria, Union of German Architects (BDA) in Germany, and the Architectural Union Santa Clara in Cuba, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2006, he was the commissioner for the Austrian contribution for the Tenth International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

Turin, 1° October 1° 2007-From October 27 th 2007 to January 13 th 2008, near the Room of the Senate of Palazzo Madama in Turin, Intesa Sanpaolo will introduce the show devoted to the projects admitted to the selection for the new Turinese center of the bank.

The six projects are those introduced from as many studies of architecture of international level: besides that, resulted then winning, of Renzo Piano, those will be exposed realized by Hiroshi Hara of Tokyo, Carlos Lamela in Madrid, Daniel Liebeskind in New York, from the study Mvrdv of Rotterdam and Dominique Perrault in Paris.

The purpose of the international consultation was that to realize a work whose characteristics represented a tall and meaningful cultural contribution to the development of the city. Illustrating her different solutions progettuali proposed by the six studies, the show it assumes an extraordinary value in subject of architecture and engineering, but he/she also offers an interesting section on the changes of which it is protagonist the city.

The scientific administrator of the show, realized from Intesa Sanpaolo in collaboration with the Foundation Turin Musei and the City of Turin, are the prof. Carlo Olmo, Headmaster of the 1° Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic in Turin.

SCI_arc Lecture: Andrew Kudless

From my office, it takes about 55 minutes to get to sci-arc in downtown. I don't know, but it seems really far. When Delgiu told me to go to the Andrew Kudless's lecture, scheduled for today, I thought: "Oh well, around here it is all smokey (because of the huge fires around LA),
it is not healthy to ride a bike. But anyway let's go, hopefully will be worth", we decided (me and DaG).

Andrew Kudless, showed us what I have been looking for for years. The relationship between the '60s module research, nature and industrialization.
He thinks about scripts that are like tools. He learned how to build wood houses in Japan. But, he said, the first thing you learn, it's not to cut or to shape the wood in the way you'd like to, instead you learn to know your tools. That's the first thing: understand deeply the tools, before even touching the material.

Often in architecture we get lost in the shape - a cool shape that doesn't go further than to be just a shell. Andrew's orientation though, goes in the same direction of Kengo Kuma's philosophy. The shell is the body, it is the architecture itself, not just a skin, but a structural skin, like in the human body the skin that is a part of a whole complex system.

Starting his research with the honeycomb structure, he undertands that nature adapt a structure slightly depending on the forces that the structure has to deal with. Working on a project, dealing with the finished object, he started noticing the natural deformations that occur in the the honeycomb structure under the force of gravity.

The complexity of such problems finds a partial solution thanks to the Voronoy script applied in Rhinoceros, that he started using a few years ago. It allows him to get closer to "nature's rule". The Voronoi diagram, well known in mathematics, has lately also found applications in architecture and design.
From the same repetitive module of the 60's to a system that changes slightly the basic module adapting it to the contest/forces.

I still remember when professor Ceragioli, of the Politecnico in Turin, once said that in Africa the walls that surround the house are more expensive than the house itself. If they would use high tecnology, like infrared systems alarms with solar panels, it would cost a lot less than building a brick wall, allowing them to invest more money into the house itself.

I was a little skeptical at the beginning about the whole Voronoy idea, but now I think that the tecnologies, like laser cutters, are getting more and more accessible, allowing us to build these systems more easily than decades ago.

From the 60's module concept, architecture is today developing a new way of rethinking the same idea, getting even closer to nature, the best architect ever.

"Andrew Kudless is an architect based in San Francisco where he is an assistant professor at the California College of the Arts. He is the founder of Matsys (materialsystems.org), a design studio exploring the emergent relationships between architecture, engineering, biology, and computation. Andrew has taught design studios, workshops, and seminars at The Ohio State University, the Architectural Association (London), Yale University, and Rice University. In 2005 Andrew was the Howard E. LeFevre Fellow for Emerging Practitioners at OSU. He earned a Master of Arts with distinction from the Architectural Association’s Emergent Technologies and Design graduate program and a Master of Architecture with honors from the Tulane University School of Architecture. In 2004 he was the recipient of a Design Merit Award in the Far Eastern International Digital Architecture Design (FEIDAD) competition and in 1998 he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to research architectural design and urbanism in the Kansai region of Japan. He has worked as a designer for Allied Works Architecture in Portland and New York and as a digital design, modeling, and fabrication consultant for Expedition Engineering in London. Andrew’s work has been exhibited in the US, England, France, Japan and China."

Shape grammar.

Shape grammars in computation are a specific class of production systems that generate geometric shapes. With shape grammars, forms can be created that are not stored in the computer previously. Shape grammars have been studied in particular in Computer Aided Architectural Design, as they provide a formalism to create new designs. The foundation of shape grammars in architectural design have been defined in a seminal article by Georgy Stiny and James Gips in 1971.

After a research on web, Massimiliano found this interesting AutoLisp Tool for Autocad to study the algorithm of shape grammar.
